Mount Union 2009 Football Recruits

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Lemon Bay (FL) High School senior Matthew Piloto has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Piloto, a 6-5, 220-pound quarterback, was a two-time Southeast Florida All-Star who threw for 1,135 yards and 21 touchdowns as a senior for Mike Messina at Lemon Bay High School.  Piloto is a former walk-on quarterback at The University of South Florida.

Piloto plans to study business administration and is the son of Larry and Debra Piloto of Rotonda West, Florida.

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Santaluces (FL) High School senior LeVon Floyd has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Floyd, a 5-10, 170-pound wide receiver/defensive back, was a three-time all-conference and two-time scholar-athlete selection for coach Paul Meunier at Santaluces High School.

Floyd plans to study sport business and is the son of Verrel and Theresa Floyd of Boynton Beach, Florida.

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Lincoln County (WV) High School senior Josh Wade has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Wade, a 6-0, 210-pound running back/safety, was an all-state and all-conference selection for coach Corey Beck at Lincoln County High School.

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Stony Point (TX) High School senior Jesus Garza has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Garza, a 5-11, 260-pound defensive lineman, was a two-time all-district selection for the 2008 state semifinalist squad of coach Craig Chessher at Stony Point High School. 

Garza plans to study political science and is the son of Tosalinda Terathan and Eugene Garza of Round Rock, Texas.

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Tuslaw High School senior Shelby Combs has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Combs, a 5-10, 190-pound quarterback, was a All-Ohio Second Team, three-time all-conference and two-time all-district selection for coach Nate Held at Tuslaw High School.  This past season he rushed for 1,150 yards and 18 touchdowns, while throwing for 630 yards and six touchdowns in the air.  For his career, he totaled 7,622 all-purpose yards and 55 total touchdowns.

Combs is an undeclared major and is the son of Doug and Karen Combs of Dalton.

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Brookfield High School senior Mac O’Brien has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

O’Brien, a 5-11, 175-pound safety/running back, was an all-district, all-county and all-conference selection for coach Randy Clark at Brookfield High School.

O’Brien is an undeclared major and the son of Chris and Laura O’Brien and Heather Wassil.

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Tri-Valley High School senior Kyle Smith has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Smith, a 6-4, 285-pound offensive lineman, was an All-Ohio, all-district and all-conference selection for coach Justin Buttermore at Tri-Valley High School.

Smith plans to study business and is the son of Michelle and Scott Sheets of Nashport.

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Buckeye Valley High School senior Scott Kidwell has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Kidwell, a 6-3, 240-pound fullback, was an all-district, three-time all-conference selection and team captain for coach Mike Marshall at Buckeye Valley High School.

Kidwell plans to study athletic training and is the son of Stacy and Terri Kidwell of Ashley, Ohio.

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Perrysburg High School senior Malachi Knisley has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Knisley, a 6-0, 245-pound offensive lineman, was a three-time an all-district and all-league selection for coach Matt Kregel at Perrysburg High School.

Knisley plans to study business and is the son of Mike and Teresa Knisely of Perrysburg, Ohio.

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Cleveland Benedictine senior Anthony Urbania has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.



Urbania, a 6-0, 205-pound running back, was a three-time All-Ohio and all-Northeast Ohio selection for Coach Art Bortnik at Benedictine High School.  The former Northeast Ohio Offensive Back of the Year rushed for over 3,500 yards and had 34 touchdowns in his career.  Urbania is an undeclared major and the son of Doreen and Dean Urbania of Wickliffe, Ohio.

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Cedarburg (WI) High School senior Zak Suhar has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Suhar, a 5-11 170-pound kicker/punter, was a three-time letterwinner and two-time all-conference selection for Coach Brian Leair at Cedarburg (WI) High School.   In 2008, Suhar was 34-of-35 on extra points and 7-for-8 on field goals with a long of 44 yards.  Suhar plans to study environmental science and he is the son of Richard and Barbara Suhar of Cedarburg, Wisconsin.

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Louisville High School senior Corey Whaley has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Whaley, a 6-3 220-pound Defensive End, was a three-time letter winner and an all-conference, all-district and All-Ohio selection for Coach Paul Farrah at Louisville High School.  Whaley plans to study exercise science and is the son of Debbie Ficarro and Gary Whaley of Louisville, Ohio.

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Waynesville High School senior Brady Deters has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Deters, a 6-1 180-pound defensive back, was a three-time letter winner and an all-conference, all-district and All-Ohio player for Coach Glen Burchfield at Waynesville High School.  Deters plans to study Education and is the son of Mary McAfee and David Deters of Oregonia, Ohio.

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Toledo DeSales High School senior Tyler Miller has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Miller, a 5-11 210-pound defensive end, was a letter winner for coach Dick Cromwell.  Miller was named team captain his senior year along with being named to the all-city team and all-academic teams.  Miller plans to study criminal justice or education and is the son of Randy and Robin Miller of Genoa, Ohio.

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Ridgewood High School senior Zach Queen has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.



Queen, a 6-1, 260-pound defensive tackle, was an All-Ohio, all-district and all-conference selection for coach John Slusser at Ridgewood High School.  Queen plans to study to become an intervention specialist and is the son of Doug Queen and Brenda Copeland of West Lafayette, Ohio.

Akron Manchester High School senior Kory Hull has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Hull, a 6-2, 200-pound linebacker, was an all-district and All-PAC-7 All-Star selection for coach Jim France at Manchester High School.  Hull plans to study to engineering and is the son of Doug and Pat Hull of Akron.

Galion High School senior Alex Nicholls has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Nicholls, a 6-2, 190-pound safety, who was a four-year letterwinner, an all-conference and all-district selection for coach Chris Hawkins at Galion High School.  He has been selected to compete in the North Central Ohio Football Coaches Association All-Star Game.   Nicholls plans to study to athletic training and is the son of Mike and Melinda Nicholls of Galion.

West Branch High School senior Eric Bates has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Bates, a 6-0, 180-pound wide receiver, who was a four-year letterwinner, an all-conference and all-district selection for coach Bob Altenhoff at West Branch High School.  He was also the team captain and won the team award for most outstanding offensive back.  Bates plans to study to accounting and is the son of Scott and Linda Bates of Salem.

Tri-Valley High School senior Ross Clayton has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Allison, a 6-1, 205-pound tight end, who was an All-Ohio, all-district and all-conference selection for coach Justin Buttermore at Tri-Valley High School.  This past season, Allison was the leading receiver (17 yds/catch) and had eight kick-offs with an average of 29 yards per return.  Allison plans to study to chemistry and is the son of Jeff and Mollie Allison.

Woodridge High School senior Joshua Chadima has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Chadima, a 6-3, 170-pound wide receiver, was three-year letterwinner and all-conference selection for coach Eric Ervin at Woodridge High School.  Chadima plans to study education and is the son of Emil and Lori Chadima of Cuyahoga Falls.

Geneva (NY) High School senior Jasper Collins has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Collins, a 5-11, 170-pound wide receiver, was an all-state, all-league, All-Greater Rochester selection and was the Finger Lakes Player of the Year for coach David Whitcomb at Geneva High School.  Collins plans to study sport business and is the son of Jasper Collins and Cecilia Rodriquez of Geneva, NY.

Northeast (FL) High School senior Nicolas Monsalve-Perez has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Monsalve-Perez, a 5-9, 212-pound linebacker, was an all-county selection for coach Adam Ratkevich at Northeast (FL) High School.  As a senior he tallied 102 tackles with a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and an interception return for a touchdown.  Monsalve-Perez plans to study engineering and is the son of Jorge Monsalve and Isabelina Perez of Margate, FL.

Lyman (FL) High School senior Cody Forbus has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Forbus, a 6-5, 280-pound offensive lineman, was a2008 Mad Max Coaches Award Winner for coach Bill Caughell at Lyman (FL) High School.  Forbus plans to study criminal justice and is the son of Jimmy and Karen Forbus of Longwood, FL.

Lafayette Central Catholic (IN) High School senior Mike Murphy has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Murphy, a 5-8, 165-pound running back, was an all-state selection for coach Kevin O’Shea at Central Catholic High School in Lafayette, IN.  Last season he had 700 yards rushing on 53 carries with nine TD on the ground.  He also caught 68 passes for 900 yards and eight receiving touchdowns.  Murphy plans to study business and is the son of Pat and Kim Murphy of Lafayette, IN.

Kehres to Recieve Lee Tressel Ohio College Coach of the Year Award

(WESTLAKE, OH)--Mount Union College head football coach Larry Kehres will be presented the Lee Tressel Ohio College Coach of the Year Award at the Northeast Ohio Chapter of the National Football Foundation Awards Banquet Monday at LaCentre Banquet Facility in Westlake, Ohio.



The award will be presented by Jim Tressel, head football coach at The Ohio State University and son of the late Lee Tressel, for whom the award is named.

In 2008, Kehres led the Purple Raiders to an undefeated 15-0 record and a 10th NCAA Division III National Championship.  He was named National Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association and the Columbus Dispatch Coach of the Year.  Kehres enters his 35th season at Mount Union in 2009 and 24th as head football coach with a record of 275-21-3.

In addition to the award for Coach Kehres, senior linebacker Chas Yoder (Martins Ferry/Martins Ferry) will receive a scholar athlete award that includes a $2,000 post-graduate scholarship.  Yoder, who was second on the team with 77 tackles and a team captain on this past season's national championship team.  Yoder, an Academic All-OAC selection, recently graduated with a degree in middle childhood education.

Coshocton High School Senior Derek Zerbe to Play Football at Mount Union

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Coshocton High School senior Derek Zerbe has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Zerbe, a 6-3, 220-pound defensive end, was a two-time all-conference selection for coach Marty Arganbright at Coshocton High School. 

Zerbe is an undeclared major and the son of Jeff and Nancy Zerbe of Coshocton.


Cuyahoga Falls High School Senior Thomas Gemmell to Play Football at Mount Union

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Cuyahoga Falls High School senior Thomas Gemmell has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Gemmell, a 6-2, 280-pound offensive lineman, played for coach Michael Miller at Cuyahoga Falls High School. 

Gemmell, who plans to study criminal justice, is the son of Stephen and Teresa Gemmell of Cuyahoga Falls.

 
Ridgewood High School Senior Allen Max Freetage II to Play Football at Mount Union

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Ridgewood High School senior Allen Max Freetage II has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Freetage, a 6-4, 200-pound defensive end, was an All-Ohio selection as a senior and two-time all-conference selection for coach John Slusser at Ridgewood High School. 

Freetage, who plans to study criminal justice, is the son of Andrew and Nancy Freetage of West Lafayette, Ohio.

 
Nordonia High School Senior Eric Vukmanic to Play Football at Mount Union

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Nordonia High School senior Eric Vukmanic has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Vukmanic, a 5-11, 190-pound placekicker, was a three-time special teams MVP and all-conference first team selection for coach Al Huge at Nordonia High School.

Mount Union went 15-0 last season and claimed its 10th NCAA Division III National Championship.  Larry Kehres begins his 35th season at Mount Union in 2009 and 24th as head football coach with a 275-21-3 record.  The Purple Raiders open the 2009 season Saturday, Sept. 5 at 4 p.m. at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, NY.

Vukmanic, who plans to study engineering, is the son of Joe and Connie Vukmanic of Macedonia.

(ALLIANCE, OH)—North Canton Hoover High School senior Jeff Meek has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Meek, a 5-11, 190-pound placekicker, was an All-Ohio special mention and a two-time all-league, all-region and all-county selection for coach Don Hertler Jr. at North Canton Hoover High School.

(ALLIANCE, OH)—West Branch High School senior TJ Snyder has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Snyder, a 6-4, 320-pound offensive lineman, was the team captain and won the school team leadership award for coach Bob Altenhof at West Branch High School.

Snyder, who plans to study political science, is the son of Steve and Jodi Snyder of Alliance.

Warren Howland High School Senior Matthew John Cash to Play Football at Mount Union

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Warren Howland High School senior Matthew John Cash has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Cash, a 6-2, 310-pound lineman, is a four-year letterwinner for coach Dick Angle at Warren Howland High School.

Cash, who plans to study pre-med, is the son of Kenneth and Kimberly Cash of Warren.

 
West Branch High School Senior Chad Butcher to Play Football at Mount Union

(ALLIANCE, OH)—West Branch High School senior Chad Butcher has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Butcher, a 6-2, 175-pound wide receiver, was an all-conference, all-district, all-county selection and team captain for coach Bob Altenhof at West Branch High School.  For his career, Butcher caught 104 passes for 1,541 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Butcher, who plans to study sport business, is the son of Mike and Darla Butcher of Salem.

 
Woodridge High School Senior Josh Cunningham to Play Football at Mount Union

 (ALLIANCE, OH)—Woodridge High School senior Josh Cunningham has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Cunningham, a 6-2, 185-pound kicker, was an all-conference selection for coach Eric Ervin at Woodridge High School.

Cunningham is an undeclared major and the son of Jay and Judy Cunningham of Cuyahoga Falls.

 
Blackhawk (PA) High School Senior Zach Hayward to Play Football at Mount Union

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Blackhawk High School senior Zach Hayward has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Hayward, a 6-4, 175-pound quarterback, was an all-conference selection and two-year letterwinner for coach Joe Hamilton at Blackhawk High School.  He passed for 3,006 yards in his career with 37 touchdown passes. 

Hayward plans to study education and is the son of Greg and Barb Hayward of Beaver Falls, PA.

 
Jenkins (FL) High School Senior Clarence Sconiers to Play Football at Mount Union

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Jenkins (FL) High School senior Clarence Sconiers has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Sconiers, a 6-2, 220-pound defensive end, was an all-county selection that was a four-year letterwinner at Jenkins High School in Lakeland, Florida.

Sconiers plans to study engineering and is the son of Clarence W. and Rachel Sconiers of Lakeland, Florida

 
St. Joseph (MI) High School Senior Matthew Mattox to Play Football at Mount Union

(ALLIANCE, OH)—St. Joseph (MI) High School senior Matthew Mattox has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Mattox, a 6-3, 270-pound offensive lineman, was an all-state, three-time all-district and all-conference selection for coach Elliot Vzelac at St. Joseph High School in St. Joseph, MI. 

Mattox plans to study business and is the son of Robert and Janet Mattox of St. Joseph, MI.

 
Jeannette (PA) High School Senior Cameron Baradziej to Play Football at Mount Union

(ALLIANCE, OH)—Jeannette (PA) High School senior Cameron Baradziej has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this Fall.

Baradziej, a 6-1, 180-pound quarterback and punter, was a four-year letterwinner, team captain and took over at quarterback for Terrelle Pryor at Jeannette High School for coach Ray Reitz.

Baradziej plans to study sport business and is the son of Joel and Kathy Baradziej of Jeannette, PA.
