Mount St. Joseph Announces Additional Recruits

The College of Mount St. Joseph is annoucing the addition of five new incoming recruits for the 2012 season.

Christopher Spruill - Chris was a member of Head Coach Gary Jackson’s John Adams High School football team last fall in Cleveland, OH. At 6’2” 235 pounds, Chris will bring us great versatility on the Defensive side of the football next fall. Chris was a 3 year Varsity Letter-Winner and had 7 sacks last season. He will study Sports Management next fall.

Shane Kelly - Turpin High School’s Shane Kelly has decided to join the MSJ family next fall. A two year varsity kicker/punter, Shane was 1st team FAVC, All District, and Honorable Mention All-Ohio. Shane was also an award winning soccer player while at Turpin and we look forward to his impact at MSJ both on the field and in the classroom.

Spencer Brown - Brown is 6’3 180 pound receiver from Bishop Brossart High School. Son of Steve and Sharon Brown, Spencer represents another big time recruit from Northern Kentucky. While Spencer played for Coach Matt Reinhart and the Mustangs, he set two school records for offense! Most TD receptions in a career, most TD receptions in a game. Spencer also received several accolades: Skilled Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, Tri-State Internet Sports Radio Offensive All-Star Team, NKAC All-Star Team and NKFCA All-Star Team. Spencer is undecided on a major for next fall but is excited to begin his career as a Lion!

Jarin Johnson - Son of Lisa Johnson and Tony Shelton. Jarin is 5'9, 248 pounds and played linebacker at Purcell Marian high school for head coach Brian Miller. Jarin was a four year starter, team captain, defensive MVP and 1st Team all GCL. Jarin has a rare blend of size and speed that makes this linebacker very hard to deal with. He is another GCL player who has decided to stay and represent the state of Cincinnati. Jarin is a part of several community outreach programs and enjoys helping at pre-schools around his community. He will be majoring in Sports Management in the fall.

Bryson Thompson - Son of Rick and Mary Kay, Bryson comes to us from Boone County High School. His father, Rick Thompson, is also the head football coach. Bryson a 5’9 180 RB/WR lead the team in scoring this past season with 13 Touchdowns and compiled over 1000 yards all-purpose! Bryson plans to major in sport management with a minor in coaching at the Mount this Fall.

Lions' football announces group of recruits for 2012 season

The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces the following high school seniors will attend the College and play football in the fall of 2012 for the Lions:

Jarin Johnson - Son of Lisa Johnson and Tony Shelton. Jarin is 5'9, 248 pounds and played linebacker at Purcell Marian high school for head coach Brian Miller. Jarin was a four year starter, team captain, defensive MVP and 1st Team all GCL. Jarin has a rare blend of size and speed that makes this linebacker very hard to deal with. He is another GCL player who has decided to stay and represent the state of Cincinnati. Jarin is a part of several community outreach programs and enjoys helping at pre-schools around his community. He will be majoring in Sports Management in the fall.

Jaylen Lindsey - Princeton High School’s highly touted Jaylen Lindsey will join the MSJ defense next fall. Standing in at 6’1” and 230 pounds, Jaylen will bring great speed and athleticism to the team next fall. Jaylen was a dominate player in the GMC, last season he had 31 tackles, 4 for loss, and 3 Sacks. Jaylen is another defensive lineman that is staying home and representing the State of Cincinnati. The "Viking Party" as they call it at his high school is now coming to the College of Mount St. Joseph.

Matthew Simms - After being a 4-year letterman under Head Coach Paul Rains at Mercer County Senior High School in Kentucky, Matthew has decided to join the MSJ football team. Standing at 6’1” 190 pounds, Matthew lead his team in tackles in both his Junior and Senior year campaigns, as well as becoming defensive captain and a member of the All-Area team. We look forward to utilizing Matthew’s football talents, leadership, and service experience as he works toward his degree in Criminal Justice.

Anthony LaRubbio - One of the most highly recruited players comming out of Cincinnati. After graduating from Lakota East High School, Anthony chose to play football at the University of Nebraska. Anthony transferred back to play for his home city and state. At 6’1 210 pounds he will provide an immediate impact on defense that was already one of the best in the conference next fall. His dynamic skill set will be a true asset to the MSJ football program. He is also a great student and is involved in the community. The addition of LaRubbio and Bowman will bolster this stout defense.

Tim comes to the Mount from Lakota East, where he played for Coach Rick Haynes. At 6' 3" and 265 pounds Tim was a force on the Thunder Hawks' defense last year. Tim was voted to the East / West all-star team this year, his 5 sacks are testament enough for his accolades. Big #99 will continue his dominance here at the Mount in the Fall. Tim is an all GMC Performer and a player that will change the game in the trenches. Tim will help lead a 2012 class of recruits that is turning out to be very strong up front.

Joe wore number 51 for the Indian Hill Braves this past season. Standing 6' 1" tall and weighing in at 210 pounds Joe was a force to be reckoned with on the Braves' defense, he amassed 5.5 sacks, a forced fumble as well as a safety. Joe was named defensive MVP and won 1st team all-conference honors in 2012. We are excited to see Joe continue his academic and athletic career at the College of Mount Saint Joseph!

Bret was a stand out at Ryle High School in Boone County, Kentucky. He played under Coach Warner for the Raiders and was named team captain. Unfortunately Bret tore his ACL his senior year, but he has bounced back and is stronger than ever! Bret plans to major in Business at MSJ and feels that we are the best fit for himself both academically and athletically.

Tony played for Northwest High School in 2011 under Coach Chad Murphy. Tony won all-conference honors both his junior and senior year for the Jaguars. Tony chose MSJ because it was close to home, we have a successful football team and he loves wearing that blue and gold! Tony plans to major in sport management here at the Mount.

Macauley played his senior season with Southwestern High School in Kentucky. Macauley collected 70 tackles, 7.5 of which were tackles for a loss, and 2 defensive touchdowns! He was voted all-district his junior and senior year and also all-county his senior year. Macauley plans to major in paralegal studies at the Mount, with the goal of becoming a lawyer.

Josh Mathias - Josh played for Kings High School under Coach Andy Olds in 2011. He was a stand out on their already stout defense. When asked, Josh said that the Mount, "Just felt like my new home." We could not be more excited to have him on board. Josh plans to major in Business at MSJ.

Connor played at Father Ryan High School in Tennessee under Coach Bruce Lussier. Standing 6' 5" and weighing 190 pounds Connor plans to boost MSJ's offense to a new level! Connor plans to major in economics here at the Mount. Also Connor is the younger brother of current Lion, Trey McPhail.

Son of Jenny and Chris, Anthony played for Maderia High School under Coach Mike Shafer this past season. Anthony collected 76 tackles with 8.5 sacks his senior year! Those stats earned him 1st team all-league as well as Maderia Defensive MVP. Anthony said that he chose MSJ because of our atmosphere, winning tradition and our outstanding academics! Anthony plans to major in Criminal Justice at the Mount.

Joe played for La Salle High School under Coach Tim Grippa this past season. The Lancers will no doubt miss the talents of Joe Pfiester on offense next year, but we look forward to what Joe will bring to the Lions! As an academic stand out at La Salle, Joe won both Latin and Religion Scholar of the Year! Joe plans to continue his academic excellence here at the Mount, majoring in physical therapy.

Son of Mary and Michael, Edward played for the Roger Bacon Spartans under Coach Kevin Huxel. While with the Spartans Edward's key statistics were his 2 sacks, fumble recovery and a defensive touchdown, alongside a long list of tackles. Edward also received the Spartan Spirit Award his senior year! Edward plans to major in English, and entering the teaching field to become a high school football coach.

Mark played his senior year for Hamilton High School under Bob Jacoby. A stand out on the offensive line, Mark is 6' 1" and 305 pounds, a true asset to any offense, and we are excited to see what he will accomplish at the Mount! As a two year varsity letter winner for the Big Blue, Mark plans to continue his success on the field and off the field at MSJ. He plans to major in physical therapy or athletic training in the Fall.

Jacob, the son of Deborah and Rudy, comes to the Mount from Loveland High School. Playing for Coach Andrew Marlatt, Jacob collected 6.7 tackles per game and won Loveland Defensive MVP his senior year. Jacob plans to major in sport management when he comes to the Mount in the Fall.

Kevin Roundtree - Kevin, son of Joanne and Ken, was a stand out for Princeton his senior year! At 5' 10" and 175 pounds Princeton's defense definitely lost some talent, but when one door closes another one opens and the College of Mount Saint Joseph's defense will be pumped up with the extra efforts of Kevin Roundtree. Kevin plans on majoring in sport management in the Fall.

MSJ is proud to present Jerrad Turner. Jerrad, spent the last 4 years in the United States Marine Corps protecting and serving this great country! Prior to his enlistment Jerrad was known for his success on and off the field at Williamsburg High School. He was on their Honor Roll all 4 years of his high school career and was a 4 year letterman in both track and football. Jerrad plans to major in Interior Architecture at the Mount in the Fall.

Andrew Ponder - Son of Tim and Sharon, Andrew comes to us from Center Grove High School. He played WR for Head Coach Eric Moore, and at 6' 2" 190 he was catching balls left and right! Andrew was on the honor roll all 4 years at Center Grove and received 3 varsity letters in football. Andrew plans to major in Sociology/Criminology.

Marq Pannell - Son of Lazette and Torrey, Marq played for St. Francis DeSales High School for Coach Ryan Wiggins. Playing both ways Marq's stats favor his defensive play, with 3 interceptions and 1 for a touchdown. Marq was in the St. Francis DeSales chapter of the National Honor Society. Marq plans to study Business Administration at the Mount
