UPPER ARLINGTON – Leave it to two Mount Union Purple Raiders to make a play with the game hanging in the balance. “It was a couple MUC guys stepping up, there is no surprise there, they put us in position and we finally got one in there,” said North head coach Greg Frey.
Quarterback Kurt Rocco connected with Vince Petruziello on a 33-yard pass to open up the game-winning drive that was capped by a one-yard plunge by Lake Erie’s Tony Howard (pictured) as the North team recorded the 7-0 victory in the inaugural OhioCollegeFootball.com Senior Bowl at Marv Moorhead Stadium.“Coaches wanted a double move, but right off the start I beat him off press, put my arm in the air and Kurt threw a nice ball,” said Petruziello, who was a late addition. Rocco added, “I thought it was a bad ball and going out of bounds. Vince made a helluva catch.”Following the completion that got the ball down to the 18 yardline, Rocco found Ohio Northern’s Justin Linzy for a six-yard gain. Howard took over with runs of four, seven and one yard to complete the only scoring drive of the game.Howard, who had a 40-yard jaunt earlier in the second half, finished with 68 yards on eight carries. It didn’t take long for the South team to put pressure on the North defense to preserve the victory. Andre Jones (Akron) took the ensuing kickoff 46 yards, and with a five-yard penalty, they were 34 yards from the tying score. Immediately, Wittenberg’s Aaron Huffman found his teammate Patrick Williams for a 27-yard connection. However, four straight incompletions from the seven aided the North victory.“I was thankful we had those four shots to be honest with 30 seconds left you never know what’s going to happen,” said South head coach Matt D’Orazio. “For us to get it down there and to even have a shot shows what kind of guys we have – fighting all the way to the end.”Rocco was named the game’s offensive MVP as he threw for 137 yards on 12-of-21 passing with one interception. Petruziello finished with six catches for 66 yards, while Linzy had five receptions for 65 yards. The North team survived six turnovers, four fumbles – two coming on bobbled snaps, to come out victorious in the defensive standoff. They forced five turnovers themselves as the defense dominated the action. Part of the reason for the low scoring action was the ability of the defensive lines on both teams. Game rules prevented blitzing, but it didn’t keep the lines from registering nine sacks, five by the North. South defensive tackle Conor Reilly (Ohio) was the only player with multiple sacks, recording two. “Super impressed with the guys and the way they flew around,” said D’Orazio. “I was most impressed with how clean the game was played. No jawing, no personal fouls, none of that stuff. There is no question the guys had the right attitude and played their hearts out.”Frey added, “We tried the gear the game towards the offense but you can tell we had some very strong defensive lineman, linebackers and defensive backs making plays all over the place,” Mount St. Joseph defensive end Alex Harbin (South) was in the middle of the action with two fumble recoveries, as was South linebacker Kyle Lohrman. The Wittenberg star was named the game’s defensive MVP with eight tackles and an interception.Defensively for the North, Bryan Albani (Wooster) and Matt Greives (Heidelberg) tied for the team lead with six takedowns.Scoring opportunities were at a premium and it was the South team that had the best chance to dot the scoreboard in the first half. However, Marcus Waugh (Cincinnati) fumbled the ball out the back of the endzone on the first play of the second quarter.“It’s been a fun run,” said Frey. “It’s a great opportunity for these young men to have another chance to play. I’ve met some great young man … I was very honored to be able to coach them and be able to work with them.”

(Article By Amy Saunders/Columbus Dispatch) With two national titles and only two losses, Matt Williamson could hardly have asked for a better four years of football at Mount Union College.
The success made his last game especially tough: The Raiders lost last year's NCAA Division III Championship to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, which also beat them in the 2007 title game. "The last game was disappointing. I didn't want to end my college career on a loss," said Williamson, a defensive lineman and graduate of St. Francis DeSales High School. On Saturday, though, he can put on his helmet and pads one more time as a collegian. Williamson is among 90 seniors who were invited to play in the inaugural Ohio CollegeFootball.com Senior Bowl, an all-star game at Upper Arlington High School. The athletes come from 32 colleges , ranging from Division I schools such as Ohio State (cornerback Andre Amos) to National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics schools such as Malone and Walsh. The North team will be coached by former OSU quarterback Greg Frey, while former Columbus Destroyers and Otterbein College quarterback Matt D'Orazio will coach the South team. Todd Oliver, owner of the 2-year-old OhioCollege Football .com, said he wanted to give seniors one last college game, estimating that 85 percent of them won't continue their football careers. For some, however, the game might be a final attempt at capturing the interest of scouts and agents. A few of the Senior Bowl's top players, including Ohio State kicker Aaron Pettrey, dropped out of the game to focus on next week's National Football League draft, Oliver said. Others, though, could benefit from the extra playing time. "They all have a dream of continuing their careers, whether that be indoor football , the Canadian league, the United Football League," he said. "It's tough making those teams; it really is. The game's purpose, he said, is "to increase those odds." Otterbein cornerback Chad Woodfork sees the bowl as a chance to prove himself against athletes from bigger-name schools. He has talked to recruiters for the Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks and Miami Dolphins. "Coming from a small school, you play with a guy from Division I or Division II and you're like 'I'm just as good as him,' " said Woodfork, a South High graduate. "I'd like to impress a couple scouts, maybe play on the next level." The game, Williamson said, is a chance to play once more with four Mount Union teammates, although he hopes to attend an NFL recruiting camp for long snapping. "I'm just trying to live out my dream," he said. "Even if I got a tryout, I'd be happy." OhioCollegeFootball.com Senior Bowl MARV MOOREHEAD STADIUM, 1650 RIDGEVIEW RD., UPPER ARLINGTON (WWW. (Article By Mark Podolski/The News-Herald) Now comes the difficult part for Dan Whalen: Playing the waiting game.Waiting to hear if another NFL team calls to bring him in for a workout.Waiting to hear if a team is interested in signing him as a street free agent following the conclusion of the NFL draft in two weeks.Until then, Whalen, a South graduate, is satisfied he represented himself well as a dark horse NFL prospect. His latest workout, Sunday in Berea for the Browns, along with more than 20 other prospects from the area, went well, Whalen said.Click Here To Read The Rest of The Article

By BRIAN LESTER - Joe Knopick, E.J. Whitlow and Anthony Fields, all former University of Findlay football players, are still chasing their dream of playing football at the next level.
It certainly isn't an easy thing to do, but at the same, it's not impossible either. Other Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players have reached the next level, including the NFL. Knopick, Whitlow and Fields wouldn't mind being the latest players to continue their careers.Click here to read the rest of the article
