Ashland Announces 2010 Football Schedule

Monday, February 15th 2010 @ 7:58 PM    post viewed 446 times

Ashland University football fans will be able to enjoy the Dwight Schar Athletic Complex, Jack Miller Stadium/Fred Martinelli Field six times in 2010. The 2010 football schedule was released today and the Eagles will play at home six times in the coming season.

AU will meet five GLIAC opponents at home and play a non-conference game against Bloomsburg. For the third consecutive season, Ashland will open the season with Bloomsburg. The Huskies will be in town on Saturday, Sept. 4, for a 1 p.m. kickoff.  That is Labor Day weekend.

The first GLIAC team to visit Ashland will be Hillsdale, on Sept. 18. That will be the first night game in the history of the new facility.  The Eagles and Chargers will do battle at 7 p.m.  The winner of this annual game receives the Traveling Trophy.

Other teams coming to Ashland in 2010 are Northwood (Oct. 2), Tiffin (Oct. 9), Saginaw Valley State (Oct. 23) and Lake Erie (Nov. 13).  Hillsdale and Northwood visited the Complex last season. For all the other visiting teams, this is their first look at AU’s new, on-campus facility.

The 2010 season also marks the debut of Lake Erie and Ohio Dominican as GLIAC opponents.  Ashland meets those two teams on the final two weeks of the regular season.  Both teams played independent schedules last season.  Lake Erie was 7-4 and Ohio Dominican finished with a 7-3 record.  Ashland’s final three games are against Ohio schools. On Oct. 30, Ashland plays at Findlay.

The Eagles’ GLIAC opener will be at Indianapolis on Sept. 11.  That is one of two night games on the 2010 card.  AU and Indianapolis played in Ashland on Halloween last season with the Eagles winning, 19-3.

Notes: Ashland went 3-2 at home in 2009.  A year ago when AU played Bloomsburg, the Huskies were ranked 15th in the country. When the teams played in 2008, Bloomsburg was ranked 25th.  The Huskies won last year’s game, 10-7 and prevailed in 2008, 49-42.  Bloomsburg was 8-2 last season.  The Eagles miss Ferris State, Grand Valley State and Michigan Tech on the GLIAC rotation.
