For the first time in the three-year history of the Ohio Army National Guard Senior Bowl, the South All-Stars prevailed, defeating the North 21-7 from a rainy Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. [box score]
Denison was well represented on this year's South squad as the entire DU coaching staff, led by head coach Jack Hatem, were in charge of the 45-man South roster. On that roster were two Denison seniors in Ed Hebb and Joe Romanowski. Both started on the offensive line with Romanowski holding down the left tackle position while Hebb was the team's starting center. The North jumped out to a 7-0 lead thanks to a 16-play 82-yard drive in the first quarter. That ended with a 10-yard pass from John Carroll's Devin O'Brein to Lake Erie's Brandon James. In the second quarter, South quarterback Ben Zoeller hooked up with his Wittenberg teammate Joh McKee from 6-yards out, tying the game at 7-7. Just seven seconds before halftime the South would convert the biggest play of the game when Zoeller found Youngstown State's Andrea Barboza on a 34-yard scoring strike for the 14-7 lead. The third and final score of the game would come with 13 minutes to play in the fourth quarter when Ohio Dominican's Michael Noffsinger scored on a 4-yard run, setting the final at 21-7. Zoeller was named the Offensive Player of the Game after going 10-of-13 for 123 yards and two touchdown passes. McKee was his favorite target, catching five passes for 64 yards and a score. The offensive numbers were similar as the North totaled 271 yards of total offense while the South finished with 278 yards. The Defensive Player of the Game was Youngstown State's Andrew Johnson who finished with six tackles and 3 sacks. At the conclusion of the game, Hatem was presented with the Minuiteman Trophy by Maj. Phillip McGonagill and Senior Bowl Director Todd Oliver. A photo gallery featuring Denison's participants can be found on Facebook.
COLUMBUS — Five Ohio Northern seniors and the entire football coaching staff participated for the North squad in the third annual OhioCollegeFootball.com Senior Bowl Saturday afternoon at Columbus Crew Stadium. [boxscore]
The South team overcame an early 7-0 deficit and posted a 21-7 victory on a rain-soaked day. ONU seniors Colin Bishop, Zack Click, Pat Dochenetz, Trygve Henrikson and Jay Priest all played in the game for the North team, which was coached by ONU head coach Dean Paul and his staff. Priest caught one pass for 25 yards to set up the North's lone score, which came during a 16-play, 82-yard drive on its first possession in the first quarter. Click, a defensive back, had two tackles and Henrikson, a defensive end, had one stop. Bishop and Dochenetz both had solid days on the offensive line. "It was an honor to be part of this event," Paul said. "It was fun. I wish we could have done better with the score, but the players had a good time and enjoyed themselves. The weather made it a bit tough to do some of the things we wanted to do offensively, but it was tough for both teams. It was nice that as a coaching staff we could have this experience with such a well-organized event." The Polar Bears will open their 2012 season Sept. 1 at North Carolina Wesleyan and will open their home schedule Sept.15 against Heidelberg.

“We take great pride in our association with this game and these players, and we’re honored to present the winning coach with a minuteman trophy to signify the big win,” McGonagill said. One player from each team will also be recognized for best exemplifying the Army Values during the Senior Bowl II experience. Minutemen trophies will also be presented to selected players at the banquet Friday night.
The National Guard will also have a strong presence during pregame activities and throughout the game.
