Tigercoach...Catch me up on Ashlands offense. Do they run a one-back offense or do they use a full back? Just curious to see how they will use Jemil in their offensive sceme since he is more of a true full back in my option.
Also, any insight to their offensive line?
Mansfield News Journal acticle that 'all but confirms' Martin will be at AU ... he still has not been seen on the field yet, but it appears like it will happen.

Ashland generally runs a spread (with just one back) so I would expect Martin will work with DJ McCoy as the main ball carrier (but Antonio Pickens, Da'Vell Winters and Justin White-Reid will probably also contribute). The Eagles will occassionally run out of a pro formation with split or I backs; generally they do not use a regular fullback.
In short yardage/goaline situations, AU will go to an I-wing (with 3 TEs) and a full-back; a couple 'true fullbacks' are there (but are youngsters) while a couple practicing in the fullback position are converted tight ends (many would call them H-backs). I've heard there has been some experimentation in practice with a 'super-heavy' formation, using a couple of the more agile DLs at fullback AND tailback! Look out for the 'Refrigerator!'
The Eagles offensive line returns ALL the starters from last year that struggled in short yardage (only 1 for 14 on 4th down conversions and gave up 35 sacks!) and in pass protection - at times, 3 frosh were starting last year! With '09 pre-season All American Justin Magruder back, and all the experience gained, the offensive line should be very productive. Projected starters:
LT - SR Kyle Stout #72 - 6'5, 287 - Ashland
LG - GR Justin Magruder #56 - 6'3, 288 - Westerville South
C - SR Matt Knex #75 - 6'1, 281 - Glenn Rock, PA
RG - R-SO Brandon Gibson #54 - 6'4, 285 - Kettering Fairmont
RT - JR - Jeremy Johnson #? - 6'5, 327 - transfer from University of Buffalo
There are a number of solid back-ups, and there is still competition at the RG spot - Kenny Noble (6'0, 290 - Fostoria), Frank Whitaker (6'2, 275 - St Ignatius), and Zach Vermillion (6'3, 252 - Bellefontaine) who all saw action last year will be in the mix. True freshman Alex Howell, 6'6, 320, from Lima Perry who already has the nick-name "Little Reggie" after AU offensive line great, Reggie Gamble, may be redshirted, but could also challenge for playing time. |
